Creating Learning and Magic With Kids

Creating learning and magic in everyday activities.

As parents, it is our mission to provide our kids with the opportunities and skills to live a successful and fulfilling life. We want the very best for them, that is undeniable. A happy, healthy childhood is an important stepping stone towards that goal. Creating experiences, building relationships, learning through life lessons, exploring, adventures into the wild, creating art, and nurturing imaginative play are allllll pieces to the puzzle of creating magic in childhood. So when it comes to creating that MAGIC, don’t look far… it is right in front of you, in the everyday, simple moments.

In a world that is full of noise and chaos, being present can be one of the most challenging things as a parent. But this is a reminder to slow things down, be intentional with your time and the people you spend that time with. And remember– your kids greatest gift is your presence, just simply being together & doing life alongside each other!

Some of the greatest joys of motherhood for me have been dancing in the kitchen, in my pajamas with my mom bun, baking cookies with my kids and batter flying everywhere! Or a casual walk around the neighborhood under the moonlight in a snowstorm. It’s true what they say, the magic is in the mundane, and life’s best lessons are life itself. As a mother, I have always included my children in the mundane tasks- around the house, errands around town, although I could totally do without kids at the grocery store, that is always a nightmare! And of course all the fun adventures (and not so fun) adventures of life! I have a personal stake in figuring out how to be intentional about shaping my own kids’ childhood experiences and making happy memories together – for them and myself. When I see how fast they grow through clothes and milestones during the school year, it hits me that the time to act is now, and it’s short. For me the goal is a “magical childhood,” one they’ll look back on with nostalgia and warmth, like a gooey, fire-roasted marshmallow.

But what does that actually look like in practical, real-life terms? If you get into the specifics, I think each family’s answer to this question will be a little bit different, we each have our own values and interests at heart.

I read an article that provided a helpful guide to outline key components of creating a magical childhood.

Creating a magical childhood means:

  1. create belonging and connection to family, friends and community
  2. give kids the space to explore
  3. celebrate achievement and growth
  4. nurture imagination and creativity.

Memories are BIG moments, and tiny moments. Get down on the floor and play with those blocks, even if it’s just for 5 minutes. That 5 minutes means everything to them!! The dishes can wait! Life is a game of balance between keeping up with life, work, responsibilities and PLAY, and everything in-between.

Annnnnd guess what?! That IS life, it’s wild and messy, sometimes tidy, projects galore, new careers, trips to the ER, cooking, travel and trips, and so much more. The key is always including them (as much as possible) so they are learning and experiencing life right next to you. Yes, it takes a whole lotta patience. Parenting is a test of PATIENCE. It’s embracing the mess. And saying “YES” (more than you say no). But the payoff of having these memories, these experiences, the simple little joys, TOGETHER, is the absolute best!

There is this quote & THE best reminder to live life alongside your child–

  • Tell them and they forget
  • Teach them and they remember
  • Involve them and they learn.

Be a seeker of everyday magic, look for it in all the little moments that make this life a BIG adventure.
